About the work
“They no longer believe in words, so they speak through jazz, theater, and poetry. They listen, but nobody listens to them. They flee from the darkness of the streets to find more darkness in bars and movie theaters. They risk and typically lose. They humbly listen to others at work to be heard in bars as they scream and vomit the remnants of their memories.”
Welcome to the Harlem jazz club. Tonight, Sonny’s band is performing. You are about to enter the mind of someone from the crowd — an ordinary high school teacher. We’ll dive into his memories… The dramatic relationship between two brothers and their lifelong conflict. Chaos and order, freethinking and hypocrisy, improvisation and tradition... Is there a way to live more rightly than others?
The concert becomes a collage of memory and fantasy. Provoking to double-check the authenticity of reality and explore the choices we’ve made in life. Are we able to accept life as it is?
This performance is not about faith in a different tomorrow, but our own reconciliation with today, accepting the world and other people as they are, not as we would like them to be.
