About the work
Once upon a time, every home longed for a piano. It usually stood in the living room like a promise — of culture, of a better future for the children, of cozier evenings. Over time, this promise faded, sending old instruments off on unexpected trajectories: gathering dust at home or carried out to stairwells and courtyards, they became decorative accents, mere reminders of their long-standing practical purpose.
"Compost" begins where the story of these instruments usually ends. Three discarded pianos, far removed from their familiar sound and appearance, become a fabric that, as it slowly decays, nourishes and creates new life: three performers sonically transport the listener into a mystical space woven with Lithuanian folk motifs.
A circus artist juggles and balances among the instruments, merging into the music-making process. As a result, the entire stage turns into a playground where objects change their original function, and performative body language becomes the connecting link that unites all these elements. The work follows a logic in which there are no inappropriate sounds, unsuitable means, or incompatible combinations of stage elements: everything can coexist.
The most ‘contemporary’ work I’ve ever been involved in. When watching, I recommend forgetting about the plot and simply immersing yourself in the here and now.
