A piano without a pianist is merely furniture.
Pianist Ivo Pogorelich

About the work
A live concert and sound sculpture — intertwined with contemporary sound technologies and live streaming — explores the dual nature of the piano: both its mundane-physical and artistic-ideational roles. It paradoxically blends the functions of one of the most popular and sophisticated instruments in music history with its identity as a piece of furniture.
Does our potential depend solely on ourselves? How can a piece of furniture, which has silenced the music within itself, break free from its closed lid? What dreamlike creature do we become when our inner calling, locked away and desperate to escape, takes over?
The musical montage in the piano concert segment includes over twenty compositions from the Romantic, Modern, and Contemporary periods. The featured composers include Johannes Brahms, Ludwig van Beethoven, Erik Satie, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, George Crumb, Arvo Pärt, and others. The works are arranged as if representing the stream of consciousness of a piano — a self-aware entity.
