PHYSICAL THEATRE AS IMAGE

KOSMOS LAB'25

For the seventh laboratory we invited performers with experience in dance, physical theatre, and visual theatre to research and develop a new way of being on stage and a type of movement, using imagery and intentions as a starting point.

She comes from a dance background. He comes from theatre. They met in 1985 and shared a desire to “create a stage image that has meaning, without claiming to be the truth, but one that is tense and filled with the contradictions that feed it”.

NICOLE MOSSOUX Belgian dancer and choreographer. Develops an authentic choreographic and movement methodology. Together with Patrick Bonté, she created the choreography for the long-running cycle “Juste Ciel”, directed by Frédéric Flamand.

PATRICK BONTÉ Belgian playwright and director. Has written numerous works for theatre, radio, and film, and has directed in Brussels, Antwerp, and Quebec. Seeks to invent a language that rejects textual narrative, realism, and psychologism.

CIE MOSSOUX-BONTÉ A company that blends the strategies of dance, theatre, and the visual arts into a single artistic language. Their performances explore sensitive and problematic areas, reflecting on our relationship with the world through a strange sense of familiarity, humour, and cold intimacy. Interested above all in the viewer’s imagination, they name the visual arts, psychoanalysis, and music — rather than theatre or dance — as their primary sources of inspiration.

The showcase

This LAB is based on one thing, which is trust.

We are proud that visual theatre is finding its place in Lithuania’s cultural field ever more clearly and firmly. We are glad that this field keeps expanding every year – from the smallest Lithuanian towns to the biggest art events.

D. Vizbaras

Producer

Kosmos LAB is one of the most meaningful projects for us; its value cannot be measured in words or numbers. Many workshop participants have continued to explore these ideas in their own creative work.

Žilvinas Vingelis

Director

It’s rare to find an organisation so open. Maybe it’s a shot to discover potential.

“Cie Mossoux-Bonté”

LAB'25 mentors

Professionals from different artistic fields together can have a dialogue here. Sharing know-how and experience between different disciplines is very favourable for the development of theatre.

Duda Paiva

LAB'19 mentor

We are in the world where adaptation is one of the keywords. We can move a lot, but therefore we need to adapt. So this LAB really prepares us for this adaptation.

Pierre Jodlowski

LAB'24 mentor

It’s a real potential. Open to do things that go further than the world.

“Cie Mossoux-Bonté”

LAB'25 mentors

It’s my first time here (in Lithuania) and I’m discovering a wonderful city, a wonderful atmosphere, wonderful people… so why not keep going with this as much as you can?

Pierre Jodlowski

LAB'24 mentor

The new generation of artists is promising, but they need a stronger foundation and opportunities to grow, innovate, and share culture with one another.

Duda Paiva

LAB'19 mentor

Beyond the theatre, beyond the technology that we are using, beyond the artistic aim, the pedagogical aim – there is an encounter. I hope that we will never replace the human encounter.

Pierre Jodlowski

LAB'24 mentor

We are looking for strange atmospheres between theatre and dance, and also deep in irrational thinking.

“Cie Mossoux-Bonté”

LAB'25 mentors

We must see light art as a separate field of art that needs to be studied.

Žilvinas Vingelis

Director

This is something so exciting because then you blend dance and you blend feet and it goes in a surreal way of thinking.

Duda Paiva

LAB'19 mentor

Projections in theatre are not that rare, but in many cases they aren’t fully explored as an equally important element...

Rimas Sakalauskas

LAB'19 mentor

Theatre saved my life because otherwise I don’t know if I would be so happy, satisfied, and full of interest and meetings like in another life without theatre.

Matteo Spiazzi

LAB'20 mentor

My dream was like… in a cellar with red curtains. Talking with an Italian guy, and suddenly came a cherry cake.

Adrian Schvarzstein

LAB'20 mentor

For me it’s very important to create the group where everybody is on the same level, including the people that work outside.

Adrian Schvarzstein

As a performance designer I don’t draw any line between set design and lighting design. I’m interested in the link, how light can be independent, but also amplify the scenography, and how scenography can metamorphose and serve the lighting.

Dr. Y. Abulafia

LAB'22 mentor

Light on stage can be both a character, and a set design, and a physical space, and one of the main engines for the development of dramaturgy or the narration of history.

Yaron Abulafia

LAB'22 mentor

It’s the occasion to go out a little bit of their comfort zone. Figure out their position on the stage, not only doing what they are supposed to do by definition

Pierre Jodlowski

LAB'24 mentor

Disconnection between the body and the brain is something completely dramatic, and I hope this lab shows one possible change for stage art in the future
