Visual Street Theatre

KOSMOS LAB'20

We left last year’s “black box” to seek out new cultural experiences in public spaces. Under the theme “Reality and Fiction: The Dramaturgy of Imagined Images in the Context of Social Life”, participants explored three genres of improvisational acting: Italian commedia dell’arte, Philippe Gaulier’s French clowning, and contemporary street theatre.

COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE workshop

MATTEO SPIAZZI – Italian actor, director, and drama teacher. A professional in mask theatre and commedia dell’arte. He has performed on the stages of both classical and contemporary Italian theatre. He leads creative workshops at universities and art academies in Verona, Ecuador, Tartu, Minsk, and Kyiv.

STREET THEATRE workshop

ADRIAN SCHVARZSTEIN – actor of mixed heritage, comedian, and director of circus and street theatre, who developed creatively throughout Europe. He also performs and sings in operas and Baroque music ensembles. His distinctive trait is blending all these experiences into a single performance, and chaos, surprise, and innocent provocations have made him one of the world’s most renowned street theatre artists.

CLOWNING workshop

MARIJA BARANAUSKAITĖ – artist and professional clown. The first Lithuanian to graduate from the “Philippe Gaulier Clown School” in Paris. Also an actress with the company “RED NOSES Clowndoctors”. She teaches at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, gives clowning classes, and leads individual workshops.

MUSEUM PARALLEL VILNIUS

dir. Linas Jurkštas

Workshop participants rehearsed intensively for a week with director Linas Jurkštas to prepare a street theatre performance, but in Vilnius’s public spaces they encountered information of enormous scale, significance, and nature — information that had been hidden from the city’s residents and visitors for many years… What kind of Vilnius do we actually live in? A scandalous veil of lies forced the creators to halt rehearsals and instead establish an independently operating museum — a place where the TRUE History of Vilnius, with a capital H, could finally be revealed.

The creators describe the newly founded museum as follows:

This is, without question, the first genuine museum of TRUE History (with a capital H!) in Vilnius. Pet a goat, discover the truth, buy a souvenir, and cast off the veil of lies. These attractions — and a heap of other important things — await you at the PARALLEL VILNIUS Museum. You will be welcomed and served only by the most educated masters and oracles of History (once again, with a capital H, of course!). We call them guides; you will call them friends. Don’t let your collective cultural subconscious wither — come and water the fields of your knowledge. Let your thoughts flourish and climb around Historical (capital H!) pedestals and columns. Leave the darkness behind. Step into the light.

This LAB is based on one thing, which is trust.

We are proud that visual theatre is finding its place in Lithuania’s cultural field ever more clearly and firmly. We are glad that this field keeps expanding every year – from the smallest Lithuanian towns to the biggest art events.

Producer

Kosmos LAB is one of the most meaningful projects for us; its value cannot be measured in words or numbers. Many workshop participants have continued to explore these ideas in their own creative work.

Žilvinas Vingelis

Director

It’s rare to find an organisation so open. Maybe it’s a shot to discover potential.

Professionals from different artistic fields together can have a dialogue here. Sharing know-how and experience between different disciplines is very favourable for the development of theatre.

Duda Paiva

LAB'19 mentor

We are in the world where adaptation is one of the keywords. We can move a lot, but therefore we need to adapt. So this LAB really prepares us for this adaptation.

Pierre Jodlowski

LAB'24 mentor

It’s a real potential. Open to do things that go further than the world.

“Cie Mossoux-Bonté”

It’s my first time here (in Lithuania) and I’m discovering a wonderful city, a wonderful atmosphere, wonderful people… so why not keep going with this as much as you can?

Pierre Jodlowski

LAB'24 mentor

The new generation of artists is promising, but they need a stronger foundation and opportunities to grow, innovate, and share culture with one another.

Duda Paiva

LAB'19 mentor

Beyond the theatre, beyond the technology that we are using, beyond the artistic aim, the pedagogical aim – there is an encounter. I hope that we will never replace the human encounter.

Pierre Jodlowski

LAB'24 mentor

We are looking for strange atmospheres between theatre and dance, and also deep in irrational thinking.

“Cie Mossoux-Bonté”

LAB'25 mentors

We must see light art as a separate field of art that needs to be studied.

Žilvinas Vingelis

Director

This is something so exciting because then you blend dance and you blend feet and it goes in a surreal way of thinking.

Duda Paiva

LAB'19 mentor

Projections in theatre are not that rare, but in many cases they aren’t fully explored as an equally important element...

Rimas Sakalauskas

LAB'19 mentor

Theatre saved my life because otherwise I don’t know if I would be so happy, satisfied, and full of interest and meetings like in another life without theatre.

Matteo Spiazzi

LAB'20 mentor

My dream was like… in a cellar with red curtains. Talking with an Italian guy, and suddenly came a cherry cake.

Adrian Schvarzstein

LAB'20 mentor

For me it’s very important to create the group where everybody is on the same level, including the people that work outside.

Adrian Schvarzstein

As a performance designer I don’t draw any line between set design and lighting design. I’m interested in the link, how light can be independent, but also amplify the scenography, and how scenography can metamorphose and serve the lighting.

Dr. Y. Abulafia

LAB'22 mentor

Light on stage can be both a character, and a set design, and a physical space, and one of the main engines for the development of dramaturgy or the narration of history.

Yaron Abulafia

LAB'22 mentor

It’s the occasion to go out a little bit of their comfort zone. Figure out their position on the stage, not only doing what they are supposed to do by definition

Pierre Jodlowski

LAB'24 mentor

Disconnection between the body and the brain is something completely dramatic, and I hope this lab shows one possible change for stage art in the future
